History of Buffalo Niagara International Airport

When Buffalo Municipal Airport was opened in 1926, it was considered one of the country's oldest public airports in the country. It has a small terminal building, a hangar, and four cinder runways, each 3,000 feet long by 100 feet wide. Passenger and mail service began at the facility in 1927. The airport tower was completed twelve years later in 1939. In the 1940s, the airport was expanded to facilitate aircraft manufacturing, test and acceptance flight activity, and airline flights.

In 1991, it was decided it was no longer economically practical to keep renovating and expanding the old terminals. Construction of the new building began in 1995 in between the two existing buildings.

The new terminal at the newly named Buffalo-Niagara International Airport opened in 1997. It had 15 gates. The old terminals were demolished to make way for new buildings in the facility.

In 2006 the main runway was repaved and extended. Today, the airport is served by two runways: 5/23: 2,691 meters by 46 meters and 14/32: 2,183 meters by 46 meters. It has 25 gates spanning the main terminal in the east and west wings.

In 2019, more than 4.8 million passengers passed through the gates of Buffalo Niagara International Airport. As of 2020, the airlines operating at the facility include Southwest Airlines, Republic Airways, Jet Blue, Delta Air Lines, and Frontier Airlines, among others.

Its busiest domestic routes include Baltimore, Maryland, Orlando, Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois, New York–JFK, New York, Charlotte, North Carolina, Detroit, Michigan, Chicago–Midway, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Tampa, Florida.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport sits 222 meters above sea level at 42°56′26″N and 078°43′56″W.
